Portland Union Station is a historic train station situated near the western shore of the Willamette River in the city’s Old Town Chinatown district. The station, a prominent Portland landmark, was built in 1896 and is renowned for its Romanesque Revival architecture, including a distinctive 150-foot tall clock tower featuring an 1898 Seth Thomas clock. The tower also features neon signs added in 1948, proudly announcing “Go by Train” on two sides and “Union Station” on the other two.
Union Station serves as a key transportation hub, connecting Amtrak routes like the Cascades, Coast Starlight, and Empire Builder, with local TriMet MAX light rail and bus services.
The station building includes Wilf’s Restaurant & Bar, offices, and an Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
